A trampoline is a great way for kids to have fun and be outside. But there are dangers associated with having a trampoline. In Canada in the 1st six months of 2004 a Montreal hospital treated over 40 children for trampoline related injuries. In order to keep your children as safe as possible here are some safety tips to follow:
Make sure there is supervision when children play on the trampoline. This will not necessarily prevent accidents from happening but it can help reduce the risk.
Make sure your trampoline has safety pads. The best are those that are a different color from the mat and which cover the springs and edging completely. For smaller children an all encompassing net will prevent them from falling to the ground if they do misjudge badly. These are not necessarily recommended for older children.
Put the trampoline in a place that is free from hindrances such trees or washing lines. Placing it on a cushioning surface such as wood chip or lawn is also recommended.
Use the trampoline only when it is dry and check regularly for wear and tear. Do not have a ladder against the trampoline for access as this can encourage small children on to the surface without supervision.
Have a set of rules for using the trampoline so your children and their friends know what acceptable practice is. Somersaults and tricks should be discouraged as they can be dangerous. Landing badly on a neck or another limb can be very dangerous. There should really only be one child on the trampoline at one time. And children should know never to go under the trampoline when someone is playing above.
Trampolines can be fun but they can also cause injuries. Play it safe and everyone will be better off and will enjoy the experience.
